Our ideal is on the right, Candle, a Boston based Toybulldog bred by us she has a head in between the two, the old original and the new, dogs who can enjoy life and run and play as dogs are meant to, far too many can no longer do this now.
The dog on the left is the ideal according to some, if not most of those breeders claiming to be preservation breeders, those dogs are going to run into more problems the longer they are bred toward the more extreme standard these breeders insist is correct, they do spend a lot of time and money testing their dogs but test all you like, if you breed toward what is known to cause faults, more faults is what you will get, and the narrower the gene pool gets over generations the more faults you will get.
Enjoy these random photos of our place and kennel so you can see not only the dogs, but how and where they live. Most people would like to see where their pups come from, how they live and what their home is like, there are always people in this day of the net who get online and bag anyone whom they consider is not as good as them and their personal set of ideals, many do not like anyone who has more than two or three dogs, terms like puppy farmer are used in a very derogatory way, this, of course, is generalised rubbish, as for the eternal cry of "In it for the money" we all charge for our pups, even the only one dog in the house type breeder is not giving pups away, selling is commerce, one breeding bitch or ten, if money changes hands, it's commercial. Breeding is a passion of mine and to actually be able to improve the general health of a line of dogs ( and pay the bills ) is a life's work, like anyone else, I charge, if those who squark the loudest about this don't like it they should lobby the ANKC show breeders because it is they who set the market value of the various breeds, not us, we sell below current market value. If they are not commercial then they can give their pups away and all puppy mills/farmers and backyard breeders who are in it for the money will cease to exist ! Calling individuals names won't change a thing, they created this situation and only they can rectify it. In Bostons it was they who not only set the high price but also they who also, over many generations, set the dreadful gene, DVL2 in the breed by breeding to a standard that has caused it to become fixed in the Boston Terriers, leading to crippling faults in many, While DVL2 twists spines and affects hearts among other things, the ever shorter muzzles and narrowing nostrils also associated with it cause breathing issues. Australian breeders are far worse than many USA breeders for insisting on breeding toward the physical traits which causes these woeful faults to affect the dogs so badly. In saying all that, there are lovely people breeding pure bred registered dogs, doing the best they can, it's just in general and over time that generations of breeders have failed to see what closed stud books would eventually lead to, a lack of genetic diversity, a high incidence of familial faults in all breeds with an ever narrowing gene pool for all as the coefficient of inbreeding increases as it inevitably must, some breeds have already reached ground zero, its outcross or extinction. I will use this web site to show you how the dogs live, and as many have done you are welcome to come and see for yourself how the dogs live, this kennel exists because of our love for dogs, we have never even taken a holiday together because we will not leave them, if its objectionable to some that we resigned from Dogs Queensland to outcross and breed colours at times, thats ok by me, I will waste no more time on this subject, merely put this bit up for those who can't make the trip and may be worried about graphic descriptions and claims made by people who have also never been here and who don't know me or Phil from Adam. While they are worried about my backyard they are neglecting their own. Phil and myself are country people, our outlook toward breeding healthy animals comes from generations of country wisdom, coupled with todays modern tools as much as is sensible and feasible for our area, we are members of Orivet breeders club and regularly do DNA tests, it is our dream in our semi retirement to breed a healthier line of both Boston Terriers and our mixed breed Toybulldogs, over the years our focus on where to go with these little mates has changed somewhat from the original dream which was to re create the old Toy Bulldog, a more Frenchy looking little dog, we have found that to go more toward the Boston is a better way for us. There are several strategies that are needed to breed better dogs, we cant fix what took several hundred years to fuck, overnight, step one is to realise that breeding for ever shorter muzzles, backs ( cobby dogs) and screw tails was part of the problem, it is known that the DVL2 gene is linked to these physical traits, dogs with two copies of this gene, which is pretty well all Bostons and French Bulldogs, can be affected very badly by it, sometimes to the point of becoming crippled, it does not always affect them, geneticists believe that this is because other genes are involved with it and sometimes stop it from presenting at it's worst, we soon realised that if we leaned toward a more moderate type, the gene was far less likely to cause any problems, this we coupled with using DNA testing, doing a cross section of our dogs after some generations of breeding away from the traits known to be linked to the gene, we found that we have indeed greatly reduced its effects, and we now also have dogs who carry only one copy of DVL2 not two, these dogs will never be affected by it because they need to have two copies of the gene to ever be affected. So far we have only one clear dog of high Boston content, but have quite a few mixed breeds clear of it. This is the single biggest improvement we had so far made, there are many more things we would like to live long enough to tweak, cosmetic faults like extremely undershot jaws, cherry eye, short toe syndrome, crowded teeth, normal sized tongues or palates trying to fit into the shortened heads, ect. however first, get your dog fit and healthy, looks and relatively minor faults can come later, it would be good if we could also breed a dog with more natural immunity to worms and the protozoan gut bugs that are become immune to current chemicals as well, ....dream on. Like the terminator....... I'll be back got to go feed pups |
Going to be along haul, but I've done it before, had our last site for many years, just got sick of their bullshit so they can stick it. I'll add all information and more as I build this one. |
